How Is a Phenol Chemical Peel Performed?
This procedure falls under the classification of a deep chemical peel and will address the lower dermal layer of the skin. Certain patients may require pre-treatment for up to eight weeks to prepare the skin for the procedure and assist with the healing process.
Dr. O’Neil’s phenol chemical peel is performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia or a sedative for optimum comfort. The solution will be applied to the surface of your skin, and patients will experience a tingling or burning sensation. Phenol peels are very strong—so strong that they are applied in sequences to allow the solution to sink in and then be processed before moving to the next location. Because of this unique process, a phenol peel can take anywhere from one to two hours to perform, depending on the number of treatment areas.
Petroleum jelly or medicated tape will be placed on the treated skin for two days.
What Is the Recovery Process After a Phenol Chemical Peel?
Because phenol chemical peels are intense treatments, your recovery time may last up to a few months. A phenol peel is the deepest type of chemical peel—it reaches the dermis. Recovery from this does take time, so patience and consistency are key, but the results are worth it.
Immediately after your phenol peel, your skin will be sensitive, sore, red, and protected with medical ointments and gauze. A thin crust will begin to form over the next 7–10 days after the procedure—be sure to follow Dr. O’Neil’s instructions for care and keep your skin protected with ointments to reduce the risk of poor healing. Once the crust starts to flake off, your face will form a scab layer over the new skin. After this point, the scabs will also fall off, revealing a new layer of skin. This layer of skin will be sensitive and likely pinkish, with residual swelling.
Avoid direct sunlight on your renewed skin, and make sure to apply sunscreen daily. Persistent redness will occur for several months, requiring makeup use during that time.
When Will I See My Phenol Chemical Peel Results?
Once your skin heals from the initial peeling, about four weeks after your treatment, your new skin should be fully visible. Fine lines and wrinkles are drastically reduced, if not completely erased, and skin tone and texture are even, clear, and youthful.
While each patient is different, redness and swelling may persist for several weeks, up to a few months, so the final results of a phenol peel will continue to improve and become apparent about two months after your treatment.

-
What is the difference between a phenol peel and a laser peel?
Laser resurfacing is another popular method of treating the skin for textural or surface irregularities. Rather than using a chemical substance to treat the skin, a laser may use a combination of heat or light waves to penetrate the dermis (at varying depths) and target pigment or texture irregularities, stimulate collagen production, or alter the shape of internal tissues. Treatment from a laser may involve a similar healing process to that of a phenol peel, resulting in a period of scabbing or peeling of the top layer of skin before the desired results are achieved.
Lasers may also take multiple sessions to reach the patient’s desired goals, which can get expensive. Additionally, lasers generally do not treat the deep layers of the dermis like a phenol peel does, resulting in less dramatic results even with multiple treatments.
-
Will a phenol peel reduce facial hair growth?
No. A phenol peel will not slow or stop natural hair growth on the face. Chemical peels treat the skin’s surface or deeper within the tissues—it does not affect hair follicles.
Phenol peels are effective anti-aging treatments for both men and women, although be advised that shaving your face before a peel may make your skin too sensitive for treatment.
-
What’s the difference between phenol peels and other chemical peels?
All chemical peels are placed on a scale of depth: from the most superficial to the deepest, chemical peels can penetrate just the surface of your skin (epidermis) to the deeper dermis levels. Superficial peels use mild acids to gently exfoliate, medium peels reach the middle layers and are usually only performed by a professional, and deep peels (such as a phenol peel) reach the deepest layers of skin for the most comprehensive skin resurfacing treatment.
